Todorov's theory

Today we considered Todorov's theory and how we could apply that to our own thriller. I explored ideas related to a disease spread throughout the human popualtion causing an uncurable mental illness, perhaps linked to drug abuse or a scientific experiment gone wrong. I also considered an opening contaning lone survivers of the disease or the start of it spreading. There are five main stages of Todorov's theory, they are:
  1. Equilibrium – A happy start
  2. A disruption of this equilibrium by an event – A problem occurs
  3. A realisation that a disruption has happened
  4. An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption – the problem is solved
  5. A restoration of the eqilibrium – A happy ending
The theory applied to my ideas. For example the equilibrium would be the world how it is today, followed by the disruption, the rumour of a deadly disease spreading, then people would begin to understand the seriousness of the situation and it would start to get out of hand. Next there would be some attempt to cure the disease, finaly a cure coudld be found. Therefore the film would follow Todorov's theory.

Todorov's theory also applies to our final idea. Although the opening does not fit well with the theory the idea for the whole feature does. The equliibrium is the two friends living a normal life, followed by the disruption, the character plotting against his friend. Then the realisation that this is happening. Next the attempt to repair the damage is him killing his friend, as he see's this as solving the problem (Preventing himself from being killed) and then the restoration of equalibrium is not complete but the realisation of his mistake is a certain amount of restoration.
