Preliminary task and storyboards

Preliminary task

Preliminary report.
The main idea for our preliminary report was a gun deal; we wanted it to show a variety of camera shots and movements as well as demonstrating match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180-degree rule. We felt that this format would enable us to show these things. We based it on an interaction between two characters, one buying the gun and the other selling. Therefore we were able to use close up shots to show the emotion on the characters faces as well as long shots, an establishing shot and an over the shoulder shot. I contributed to the initial planning, storyboarding, filming and editing of the task. I think that our group worked well together and we all contributed equally to all areas of the task. We learnt a lot from the preliminary task that will help us to improve our skills for other media coursework in the future.
We were very pleased with how the filming of the video went, because we managed to film the whole video in a short amount of time, so that we had longer to complete the editing. Also we managed to use a variety of camera shots and camera movements to ensure that the video had the desired effect on the viewer that we were aiming for. We were also pleased with the way that the editing brought the film together making it appear smoother and more professional.

Another thing that went well during the task was the way that our group worked together. We all contributed an equal amount to all areas of the task. We also made sure that everybody’s voice was heard so that we all had a say in the decisions made. I think that if we hadn’t of worked well together then the task would have been much harder to complete and our video would not have been as high quality.

We have learnt some valuable things during the planning, filming and editing of our video. For example it was clear once we started to film that we would need to use as tripod to ensure that the camera work wasn’t too shaky and to make the clip appear smoother and more professional. We also discovered that it would be very difficult to film the exterior shots of our clip in the rain, as it made the image unclear and the water on the lens meant that the shots were of a poorer quality. Therefore we made sure we filmed in dry weather. Another thing that we learnt is that it is very important to make the storyboards clear and easy to follow so that we had a clear plan and knew what to do when we started filming. This would also ensure that if anybody else looked at the storyboard they would understand it and know how to create the clip. We also learnt that it is affective to use effects (Fade in, fade out) between scenes to ensure smooth transitions between clips and prevent it from jumping. This helped the clip have a better continuity. And finally we learnt how to use the Apple Macs in a more efficient and effective way to ensure that the video appeared the way we wanted it to and so that it has the desired effect on the viewer.

We managed to keep continuity throughout the film by keeping the time of day, clothing of actors and weather the same throughout. Also we filmed all parts of the video in the same area so that the scene was similar throughout. We filmed the movements of the characters so that the viewer could easily follow and understand what was happening and so that it wouldn’t be too confusing for the viewer.

Therefore I would conclude that we were pleased with the way that our group worked together as a team and with how the filming and editing of the clip went. We also learnt a lot from the preliminary task about planning, filming and editing. We kept continuity throughout the video and were pleased with the outcome at the end and feel that it would have the desired effect on the viewer.
